The Lancashire Cotton dancers used soot. From my understanding, the Lancashire dancers used soot on their faces to show affiliation to the miners. I have an abiding memory from my only visit to the Sidmouth Folk Festival, of watching the Garstang (Lancashire) Morris Men marching into town in their clogs to the tune Salmon Tails up the Water .
