Recommended Posts

The controversial Rosebank offshore development off Shetland has been granted consent by regulators.

Located 80 miles west of Shetland, Rosebank is the UK's largest untapped oil field and is estimated to contain up to 300 million barrels of oil.

Why not reinvest the revenue created into accessible renewable energy?

I expect that would be considered a  "too sensible"   thing to do.  they like to do the opposite of what makes sense.

It’s better to produce our own oil than to import it from some of the Arab countries.

But we are not going to use it.   It will be sold on the world market and we will buy ours from Norway,  who will buy theirs on the world market.

So it really will not make such a lot of difference except to let the money men make a lot more money.

The government should not try to make it sound as though we are going to be producing the oil we use.

Remember the excitement about North Sea Oil in the 70's? It was commonly thought that whoever won an election in the late 70's would be in power for years as they would be able to fund so much infrastructure / public services - hospitals, schools, transport etc.

Instead it was spent on tax cuts which largely benefitted  the well off, and throwing a couple of million on the dole.

Presumably any money accruing to HMG from this will just be spent on tax cuts for the well off - eg fund cuts in inheritance tax, reduction in top rate of income tax.
