Irene Swaine
This is a heads up to anyone looking for a bar to visit on Glossop Road/West Street. Avoid One Four One Bar, there is some dodgy behaviour going on there. They are scanning people's passports and keeping a copy of them! Would you be happy with some person you don't know having a copy of your passport details? I wouldn't. Shame on them. Surely this is a breach of privacy and GDPR. There are people out there who will pay good money for data harvesting and people who counterfeit passports using genuine citizens' details. It could land you in bother. If you look under 18, some bars will ask to see it as proof but they shouldn't be scanning copies of it and keeping it on their computer. It doesn't even seem to be about that, as they are doing it to people of all ages. It seems very dodgy why they want copies of so many's personal details. Some of the details could be asked as security questions to access bank accounts. 2 minutes ago, bassett one said: is it for proof of ID with the new students ?and then kept on file for future visits? Nope, they said they are asking every single customer, even those over 50. Data protection etc means they certainly shouldn't be filing copies of this info, certainly of security documents. We don't know how this is stored and who could access it.

(2) (1) Not everyone has a passport, and wouldn't routinely carry it with them in this country. As you say, retaining copies (or even scanning them), probably means they are breaking GDPR. Do they say why they are doing this? (2) As above, they are probably breaking the law.
HeHasRisen
How do you know they are keeping copies of it? Did they tell you? Some venues like Tank have ID scanners but this is merely to verify its real. Scanning of IDs is more common than you think, in most cases its something they will have to do either from a police or licensing perspective (or both). HeHasRisen
Just now, Irene Swaine said: They didn't say why they are doing this, I agree they are breaking the law. See above. They likely arent. Who told you they are retaining copies?
RollingJ
@HeHasRisenI admit I am suspicious of this topic, but does everyone carry a passport when on a night out? - I certainly wouldn't be doing so, losing it could be costly. More details are needed.
