Our Prisons Are Full

Recommended Posts

Prison governors say it is ‘inevitable’ spaces will run out as male population rises by 400 in a fortnight.

There are just 557 spaces left across the entire prison estate, with that number thought to be significantly lower in men’s jails, which also includes spots in Category D “open prisons”, for which most prisoners are not eligible.

Defendants convicted of some of the most serious crimes including rape and burglary will reportedly face delays in going to prison from next week because jails are full.

Our Government are incompetent, at numerous things!

If prison worked properly there would be very few reoffenders. Unfortunately there are loads.

IMO, Prison is not only about deprivation of liberty, but rehabilitation and re-education, but this is not happening sufficiently, so too many come back.

TV in cells should be only for programmes with this aim, as should all permitted books and literature; a relatively cheap way of getting the messages across. All prisoners should be trained in a skill which will enable them to make an honest living, such as plumbing, carpentry etc. Support given on the outside to find accommodation and work,

And assuming time, money and effort have been spent to make this happen, prisoners sentences should be increased / doubled each time they reoffend, with penalties such as hard labour thrown in.

I agree with what the Justice Minister Alex Chalk said:

"A short stretch of a few months inside isn't enough time to rehabilitate criminals, but is more than enough to dislocate them from the family, work and home connections that keep them from crime.

"This is the wrong use of our prison system and taxpayers' money. It doesn't deliver for victims and it doesn't cut crime."

It just makes me wonder why this hasn't been implemented after all their years in Government.

I agree with this.

I would also like to add to this, that automatic halving people's sentences should be scrapped.

However, prisoners who do show genuine signs of improvement can earn earlier release.

As our population gets larger, so will the amount of criminals. It's not rocket science.

I just don't understand why more prisons can't be built.

Because the government don't like spending money and,  unless it's something they want to do. They usually claim they don't have any,

Most are in there because they're idle.   Just make them work,  very, very hard.
