The Great Climate Fight.

Sorry - I have better things to do with my time, and in any case I use my TV - sparingly -  for entertainment, not to depress myself - mind you, it might be a laugh.

Then I don't see how you can pontificate on things you have no knowledge of.

You're right that the times are depressing, but do a little research and find out why. Burrying your head in the sand won't help.

Is anyone watching Channel 4 'The Great Climate Fight' (9.0pm) because you really should. Especially if you're interested in climate change.

It will be repeated at 10pm on chanel15. It's a real eye opener and what I've been saying for yonks.

The answers are out there...

Was rather amusing watching Shapps explaining how "we can't rush into doing the things that will actually achieve the Governments stated goals far faster than any other pathway"...

...as intellectually dishonest as is possible to be.

You obviously didn't watch the programme then. It was about just that.

Did you know the Conservative government is subsidising the oil and gas industry to the tune of £42 Billion a year with our taxes?  Me neither. That's in spite of the oil companies making £Billions every year in profits at our expense.

Watch the programme if you want to open your eyes.

Bringing a  reliable and dependable supply of  oil and gas to your doorstep and transporting it all over the world is not an easy proposition in today's dangerous world, Anna.

Canada's attempt to nationalize and operate a major oil company, PETROCANADA, under a previous socialist government, was an abject failure (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petro-Canada) It became worthless in spite of it's initial popularity among government employees and well meaning folk,

It was eventually given back to the Oil Industry, where it became viable again.

By the way I keep BOTH eyes open :)

But I'll let the BBC try to explain it to you:

Why are BP, Shell, and other oil giants making so much money right now?

Oil companies have to operate in a world where the price of oil can go down as well as up, with little warning. Money made in the good years helps to balance out years when oil prices are low.

Many oil companies lost billions from Russian investments last year - BP wrote off $24bn of investments in the Russian oil company Rosneft, for example.

They also have to invest billions to find new reserves of oil to keep supplies running until the world switches over to renewable sources of power.

Energy companies have a big role to play in that switch-over, too. BP and Shell invest some of the billions they make from oil and gas into renewable power such as solar and wind farms, and charging stations for electric cars.

BP boss Bernard Looney said the British company was "helping provide the energy the world needs" while investing the transition to green energy.

Shell chief executive Wael Sawan said that these are "incredibly difficult times - we are seeing inflation rampant around the world" but that Shell was playing its part by investing in renewable technologies. Its chief financial officer Sinead Gorman added that Shell had paid $13bn in taxes globally in 2022.

However, BP scaled back its plans to cut its carbon emissions this year because demand for oil and gas is so strong.

Which is why the program was concerned with reducing this outsized reliance, for cheaper and more secure alternatives. 🙄

Well of course they're going to come out with guff like that, they would wouldn't they? That doesn't make it true.

They're not going to say it's because they're greedy, selfish, robbing illigitimates are they?

The old Leftist stereotyping still persists, unfortunately. That's why socialists are a danger to your economic well being and prosperity.

The cartoon of the fat, cigar smoking robber baron, with his feet up on the desk, putting the squeeze on poor pensioners trying to heat their little flat.

When in truth he's more likely to be a Muslim sheik or a mad mullah, who own the land where companies like BP and Shell invest money in a vast infrastructure to find, recover, refine and transport oil and gas to your houses and neighborhood petrol stations, and the factories who make the stuff you buy.

BP, Shell and the others, are actually publicly owned enterprises, with a wide diversification of shareholders, across the citizenry, including individual investors, worker's pension plans, some unions and for the price of one share, people like you and I.

Yes Anna, through the magic of free market democracy, you can be an owner too!  :)

But before you buy that share, think about the risk of acts of war on your refineries, oil tankers, pipelines and other dangers like socialist countries deciding to Nationalize (steal} your assets and intellectual capital.

"BP is owned by thousands of different shareholders, with shares traded publicly on the London Stock Exchange and the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in Germany. According to CNN, the largest shareholders are Arrowstreet Capital, SSgA Funds Management and Fisher Asset Management - although they all own under 1% of all BP’s shares".

Well nothing says that like a right wing trope!

You literally became the thing you're moaning about... in the next sentence! 🤣
