How much to buy? Nobody wants to tell us without hiring the scaffold. How to design it? Nobody wants to without hiring the scaffold. Who to erect it? Nobody wants to without hiring the scaffold. How to inspect it? Nobody wants to without hiring the scaffold. Not saying it wouldn't be cheaper, but I would imagine there's a bit more to it than buying a load of scaffold, and then selling it afterwards. Councils used to have their own in-house departments for this like this. Then came PFI and outsourcing, allegedly to save money and it's cost the taxpayer even more.

Average UK cost for scaffolding is around £875 per week (2 storey, encompassing a house). The cafe isn't a 2 storey house but at that price the total for the 70 weeks it's been up is just over £61,000. So why has is cost £50k more? Not close to the details but it’s much larger than a 2 storey house. if you look at the photo on the report it’s also a structural scaffold rather than an access scaffold which will require temporary works design and more complex installation than a simple access scaffold. you can see what look like blue ibc’s weighting down the scaffold on the front elevation. in terms of the cost it would ordinarily be broken down into design cost - one off cost erection - one off cost Hire - weekly hire cost over 70 weeks dismantling - one off cost

Irene Swaine
It's a battered building that's falling apart and very difficult to fix. Too many buildings are needlessly pulled down to be replaced by bland concrete boxes but in this case, knocking down and replacing would be the best option.
ECCOnoob
I'm sure the council would have loved to have done that. But unfortunately it was a heritage building and at the mere thought of it being left to rot and pulled down, 10,000 plus people petitioned to save it. Now the Council are doing what they are supposed to. They've approved the plans for it to be redeveloped last month and they are stopping the thing from falling down but seemingly everyone is still moaning. Quite interesting that the FOI request that revealed the figures causing this "outrage" was submitted by one of the very groups who were campaigning to save the building.
