I don't mind people thinking differently as long as they don't try to change my mind. My brother's affiliations were completely different from mine but they never affected our good relationship. I can't talk about politics with my partner though because just like most lefties she gets all shouty and aggressive. I know a few Americans who fell out with their family and friends because they voted for Trump. How incredibly pathetic. I’m sure over the years we’ve no doubt voted for different political parties. A lot depends on what issues are top of your personal agenda at that time. The period when we had the most heated discussions was before we married. Since then we’ve come to agree on most things.
