El Cid
A commitment to cut net migration to less than 100,000 a year, is that a good target, even if we dont quite acheive it? The Conservative are now setting an immigration target of 445,000 by reducing our present level, 745,000 by 300,000 Home Secretary James Cleverly says the rules - if applied last year - would have reduced migration by 300,000 https://www.thenationalnews.com/world/uk-news/2023/12/04/uk-unveils-plans-to-cut-migration-by-300000-in-biggest-ever-reduction/ Give us your target! Al Bundy
They have only had 13 years to try and sort it. Even as a Tory I can quite easily say " on yer bike"
Mister M
I can remember in 2013 the then PM David Cameron said he wanted to cut immigration to "the 10s of thousands". Edited December 4, 2023 by Mister M

The target should be a net emigration figure. There are not enough houses to accommodate British born and bred people and immigration makes the situation worse. We need a government to get tough on the immigration problem. Firstly they need to crack down on the foreign student problem and only allow the student to enter the UK and not spouses and relatives. Secondly they need to up the salary level for those foreign people seeking jobs in the UK. Move the figure to £250 thousand a year salary. Thirdly the government need to get tough with benefit scroungers and make the long term unemployed take jobs such as picking vegetables in fields instead of using foreign labour.
geared
Doesn't the immigration figure include foreign university students? They pay alot of money to study at UK Universities, far more than domestic students.

Also they tend to stay in the UK after their so call studies have ended and do not return to their homelands. The University fees for foreign students need to be increased by a least a multiple of ten. Edited December 4, 2023 by Axe
geared
Not all students, only a certain type: Quote Your partner and children (‘dependants’) may be able to apply to come to the UK or stay longer in the UK. You must be one of the following: a government-sponsored student starting a course that lasts longer than 6 months a full-time student on a postgraduate level course (RQF level 7 or above) that lasts 9 months or longer
butlers
Yes great idea. Education is the biggest industry in Sheffield. Until only a couple of years back students put more into the Sheffield GDP than all but 3 other cities

Mister M
I don't understand why people have got a gripe against foreign students. They subsidise British students because their fees are much higher, and when they go back to their countries, which the majority do, they tell people what a great place the UK is to live. It's a real source of soft power in the world 53 minutes ago, Axe said: The target should be a net emigration figure. Well that'll cause the NHS and social care sector no end of problems And what if these 'benefit scroungers' don't live near farms? And don't say force them to move Edited December 4, 2023 by Mister M
