Scientists Hold 20 Mins 'Conversation' With Humpback Whale

Scientists have attracted and then held a 20 minute exchange with a humpback whale, using recorded humpback sounds. It wasn't a conversation in the usual sense - it doesn't seem like the humans were able to translate what the whale was saying, but it's interesting because the purpose of the project is to be able to develop technology that can detect non-human communications from space and be able to separate that from just 'noise'. But it will be interesting to see whether it's possible to decode whale sounds to the extent of being able to have some kind of intelligible communication with them.

Can they ask what we need to say to the alien probe when it swings by in 2286?

Everyone:

Solve the climate crisis

I wonder if we can talk to a whale???

Well, we already know how to do two out of those three, so there's enough scientific time to go around for other things. I doubt that whales have complex enough communication to ask humans 'why have you trashed our habitat?' but it would be an awkward conversation if they could.

What a load of B......s its only like having a parrot talking it don't know what it's on about just repeating its self let's spend taxpayers cash on something worthwhile might get somewhere if scientists talked to each other for a start 😁

It's the same with any science - we don't know until we test it. Whales have complex social structures so it's likely they have some level of intelligible communication. But the study is to make a computer model that can identify non-human communication from space - that's surely worthwhile, no less worthwhile than exploring other planets.
