On the subject of U.K. produced HGVs, in the course of my work I was a frequent visitor to both the Leyland works in Lancashire and Albion works in Scotland. At that time you could sense the pride of the workers although foreign producers were increasingly on the scene.

A sight not seen nowadays was the chassis and engine only being transferred from one site to another in all weather driven by a well clad driver wearing goggles.

What a job that was.

The brands for a period were named after shire horses I think

Yeah I remember seeing chassis and engines being driven around. You’re right about the Albion trucks with the horse names too. My dad drove one in the seventies and it was called a Clydesdale. I went with him in it, loaded up at Brown Baileys with wheel hubs or brake drums or something. Delivered to Leyland Motors. The three wheel trucks mentioned on here I think maybe were powered by Dodge slant six engines but I could be wrong. I do miss the variety of the old trucks like Scammel, ERF and Foden.

Have you been to the Commercial Vehicel Museum in Leyland ?

I've been a couple of times, it's great.

No .I have not been back that way since my working days.

I am no transport buff but appreciate seeing some of the old vehicles and trains.

What I always loved in my work was going in and around a wide variety of manufacturers and appreciating how things were made.

Usually in the company of people who took pride in their work.

Not so many of the big manufacturers about now sadly.

Anything with a straight 6 gets my vote Axe

It was a great engine.  What let cars manufactured at the same time was the bodywork.  They needed t be garaged.

Not if you wrap it in fibreglass.

My mates Vitesse powered Moss (Sheffield) was pretty rapid.

He's probably still got it in his garage 🧐.

Another mate had one in a Ford Pop (sit up and beg) & that was just silly :heyhey:

(The picture below isn't my mates)

I have a photograph of my Triumph GT6 which I will try to scan and upload.  A friend of mine had a Talbot Sunbeam which he kept in a garage under council flats.  The boiler for the flats was in the same garage area which resulted in the garage being heated and being a good warm home for the Talbot Sunbeam.
