Thats a train tunnel .

I never said specifically a rail tunnel or a road tunnel.

Sounds like everyone is scrabbling for a way out now.

Too expensive.  Too dangerous.  Wrong kind of tunnel etc.

Fact is that they just don't want to spend the money but that is not how we used to lead the world.

That would sure speed up a Pennine crossing...........................not.

"The traffic jam can easily reach over 10 km on a Saturday in front of the north portal and on the south portal as well on a Sunday. The longest traffic jam in 2019 was 18 km. The waiting time can easily reach up to 4-5 hours."

Compared to driving  20 odd miles, about 3 times as long. Safety measures - just one train at a time ,  A parallel safety tunnel for evacuation / rescue etc. Minimum cost one way £60.

You don't have one train at a time if it's a road tunnel.

Plenty of countries have decided that tunnels are worth it and I agree.

They have them longer than that on the M1 and I have often been in them.

See post above,

I've already seen it and been in plenty of bigger traffic jams.

So a tunnel like the Gotthard  in Swizserland could add hours to your Pennine crossing then  😎

It could if they were jammed up permanently which they are not.

You can't explain why so many countries build and use tunnels.

Just more excuses.
