You can't explain why so many countries build and use tunnels. Just more excuses. I thought the premise for a Pennine tunnel was "It would make the journey east to west extremely quick and extremely safe in any kind of weather." https://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/topic/489943-we-need-a-tunnel-under-the-pennines/page/10/?tab=comments#comment-8781717 You quoted the Swiss tunnel which you can often queue for several hours for. And I'm sure folk would love to pay the cost of these tunnels - would be far more more expensive than the Mersey Tunnel, £2 for a five minute crossing. £2.50 for the Dartford crossing (again about 5 minutes). There's only you denies that it would be quicker. We didn't seem to mind the cost of the Channel Tunnel, HS2, and Cross Rail. Oh, we weren't asked were we ? There are 11 tunnels more than 8 miles in length. 9 of them built in this 21st century. It looks like the enthusiasm and the willingness to pay the costs is still there. I wonder why ? But don't ask the cheapo's
