We Need A Tunnel Under The Pennines

Recommended Posts

Parliament approved construction of the A57 snake pass in 1818, engineered by Thomas Telford, and the road opened to the public in 1821. Tolls continued to be collected on the road until 1870.

As central government has not improved the route since, it must fall to the local authorities to plan and implement the building o any improvement.

Would people be prepared to pay a toll to use the road tunnel in order to fund the huge cost?

It could be a similar type channel tunnel rail crossing where you could put your feet up if the builders of that scheme could be influenced to look at the project.

(1) Rather contradicts (2) - is it a road or rail tunnel, it certainly wouldn't be both.

It would be one or the other.

The A57 was self funded after 50 years, no one knows how long it would take to fund a road tunnel.

A rail tunnel service like the channel tunnel will forvever need to be paid for to keep running

One hell of a very long time - certainly more than 50 years.

How often do we get snow like today?

I'm afraid the cost of a tunnel outweigh the benefits

They don't only build tunnels because of the weather.

Back to cost again,  so you mean that we are the only country that can't afford to build a railway line or a tunnel.

You wouldn't think so when you see the gold stage coach and all the mounted soldiers with swords,  not to mention 17 or more royal houses all staffed.

Pointing out that everyone can do it but us,  which is what I said in the first place.      Rule Brittania.

Neer mind getting to Manchester. It took my daughter two hours driving to get from Meadowhall to Birley.

Because this big world power can't afford a proper road system either.

So why do we need a rail/road tunnel, when there are already three roads and a rail link?
