I would definitely remove side shoots, they take away nutrients from fruit producing vines  no point in having 6 ft of non producing  vines which the plant could have used for fruiting, aslo  when you plant them, go for half stem deep as tomato plants spring roots roots wherever they come in contact with soil.

I put some Pentland Javelin first early potatoes in today. I put them in a raised bed and I’ll put a cover over them if there’s a risk of frost.

Thanks . It’s just that I’m trying another new type of big tomato this year and it specifically says not to take out the side shoots.

we've grown a few heritage and heirloom varieties , they worked well much better to have good sized fruit than a shed load of green vines doing nothing.

Highly recommend San Marzano plum tomatoes they are superb for passata .
