O.K. Walking from Fitzalan Square toward Pond St when Flat St drops down on the right hand side there used to be a walkway on the level with a parade of shops. I recall a wallpaper/decorating supplies, The Friary chip shop , The Minerva cafe and others. At the end used to be a Presto supermarket underneath the Top Rank and over the top of the petrol station, with a walkway across the road leading to escalators taking you down onto platforms A and B of the bus station.
RollingJ
Didn't really backfire - it was an area I didn't frequent much, although I used to use Presto when I lived on Park Hill - just didn't really take much notice of other shops in the area.

Thanks. The Minerva was very much your pie, chips and tinned peas kind of place. I believe they also did those tinned hamburgers. It was convenient on the buses if your meal break started and finished in Pond Street. Easier than schlepping round to Castlegate canteen.
Irene Swaine
The structure of the buildings where The Minerva was is still there, it's just been hollowed out and caged for the car park. It could easily be opened as a parade of shops/cafes one day.
YorkieontheTyne
Anyhow, to get this thread back on topic. As The Minerva is now closed, when I come to visit I’m gonna hire a deck chair, make up a flask and some snap and sit on Arundel Gate near the bus gate and watch it leap out and surprise unsuspecting car drivers. What larks.

What larks. I've recently noticed there appears to be an ANPR camera that's been sited between Academy and Odeon. Seems to be pointed at the road in front of the bus information centre, just prior to the junction with Norfolk St. Presumably this is to capture those who are pulling U-turns (despite the prohibition signage) to circumvent the bus gate

I could finish up on “You’ve Been Framed”.

Plus there is no prohibition driving through it in that direction, it's only from the other way past the casino.

Presumeably it's to stop people from driving up Commercial St, onto Arundel Gate then performing a U-turn (which is prohibited anyway) or turning right (also prohibited) out of the multistorey to then go back down Commercial St.

I can see a camera on a lighting column opposite the back of the Crucible. Looks more likely to be city centre security to me. That location has never been mentioned for a moving traffic offences camera and as far as I’m aware SCC haven’t installed those yet.
