One Year Of Sheffield's Clean Air Zone: Polluting Vehicles Fall By Two-Thirds

I caught an interview on Radio Sheffield one morning last week where they were speaking to Coun. Ben MIskell,  Chair of the Transport, Regeneration & Climate Policy Committee.

Coun. MIskell was brought on to speak about the CAZ with it approaching its first anniversary & he was stating how successful it was & how the number of polluting vehicles had reduced in the CAZ & therefore the air quality in the CAZ was much better than before.

Now for years their have been a number of scientific reports stating how poor the air quality is in certain parts of Sheffield & how many parts per million pollutants X, Y & Z are affecting the air we breathe.  Fair enough, as an asmatic myself I appreciate a bit of clean air.  However, Coun. MIskell was asked on numerous occasions during the interview exactly how clean the air was these days?  What was the evidence after 12 months of data being collected in the CAZ?  All he did was skirt the issue & failed to provide any evidence.   Not exactly good PR for the Chair of the committee basically overseeing the whole project.   Not even provisional figures / evidence was forthcoming.

I seem to remember that nobody from SCC was prepared to provide evidence at the 3, 6 or 9 month marks either.  The excuse then was that it was too early in the project to provide reliable data.

What Coun. MIskell did eventually state was whatever data has been collected has to be sent off to London to be evaluated & figures / data would eventually be released.    Hmmm?

It has been too early. The initial evaluation period is 2 years, I believe.

Other places like Bath and North East Somerset seem to be able to deliver a comprehensive monitoring and reporting regime, see this page.

Would be disappointing if SCC can’t do something similar.

Would be interesting to see a SCC response to this point - but I'm not holding my breath.

Thats… really good! Very open and transparent.

Would love to see similar for Sheffield.

And yet Coun. Ben Miskell can say  the air in the CAZ is cleaner but seconds later when challenged to provide even provisional data, he can't.

Says it all really - and has been shown above (Bath and NE Somerset Council) it can be done.

Clean Air Investment Plan, the projects will create a safer environment for children travelling to and from school and also encourage pupils and parents to adopt a more active lifestyle by walking, cycling, and wheeling.

As a pedestrian, I hope there are no more cycle lanes installed. They take up most of the pavement.

Look North is just starting.  There's a report coming on about Sheffield's CAZ.

I watched the Look North report.  You can see it on the BBC iplayer.

Coun. Miskell being interviewed by Tom Ingle.

Ingel: There's little data as to how air quality is changing.

Miskell: We collect that data through diffusion tubes & what will happen is then they will be taken away to be analysed & the data is then sent to Central Govt.

Ingle: If we only talk about it in financial terms not air quality terms yet, surely it's too early to claim it's a success because you don't know its, (CAZ), doing the thing you want it to do?

Miskell: This is about changing people's behaviour.

Yet again, lovely batting off Mr Miskell.  Have you thought of trying out for Yorkshire C.C.?

SCC are about as transparent as a brick wall.

Anyway according to IQAir.com the average NOx reading for the last 7 days was 25.9. ug/m3, the limit being 40.

In the last month NOx has been significantly under the limit with the exception of 10/02/23 where it reached 50 however the graph shows this to be a one-off anomoly
