Tipstaff
The streets were 'lost' years ago, mid to late 80's I'd say., to certain drug-dealing yobs with too much money, too much time on their hands and with no respect for others' lives or property.
MyFriendStan
Every time there is a incident the cops come out with the usual there will be additional patrols and increased police presence surely if there was patrols/ presence in the first place it might be a help. You make an excellent point. Since 2010, the Government have, nationally, cut Police officers by 21k, PCSO positions by 23k, austerity measures have seen 650+ stations closed or sold off. Their much vaunted 20k 'replacement officers' as per the Casey review (not 'new' as the Govt like to claim) are new, hugely inexperienced and will take years to get to any level of ability before they get anywhere near replacing those lost. Add in an underfunded justice system that has left a legacy of insufficient prison places, prison officers, solicitors and barristers not wanting to work in crime as it's seriously underfunded/ paid and you begin to get an idea of the bigger issues. It has to be said that all this has been playing out for 14 YEARS now, but people either haven't been watching or interested, until now. It's too late to make simplistic suggestions now. On a very practical level, once a kid is carrying a knife in public, it's already too late. It is then just about consequences, and who gets to visit an A and E, if they're lucky, or, all too often parents visiting a mortuary. If they're really lucky, they get locked up before they harm someone or get harmed. The issue lies in parenting, peer groups and communities. It won't sit well with some people, but similar cuts to public services, councils, youth outreach etc also has consequences. Society has failed it's kids. And until things change, the stats just get worse. Sadly.

They said: We were called at 6.13pm earlier today (9 April) to Staniforth Road in the Darnall area of Sheffield following reports of a group of men fighting. A 21-year-old man has been taken to hospital with multiple suspected stab wounds and is in a serious but stable condition. Emergency services remain at the scene and a cordon is in place on Staniforth Road between Studley Court and Main Road while officers carry out their work. There will be additional patrols in the area to reassure members of the community and we would encourage anyone with information to get in touch by calling us on 101 or via our online portal: https://www.southyorkshire.police.uk/ro/report/. I read somewhere that some shop workers wear stab vests because of local gang violence. I think it was the star. If its true that's an awful way to have to live. No one should have to go to work in a stab vest - especially not in a shop on some zero hours contract. a disgrace.

Retail staff often get the brunt. It still upsets me to see my local shops with staff that have to wear body cams for such crap money. If its so dangerous they need bodycams then they deserve danger money AND better protection.

crookesey
Political parties don’t cure stabbings single handedly, the police hopefully arrest the guilty and then they are sent to the finishing school. The penal system requires a serious re-vamp where they don’t want a return trip. Prospective members of any government need to see what our prisons do, other than locking folk up and most likely treating them better than they get at home. This is where the justice system comes into play, it needs to scare the living daylights out of the violent.

When, perhaps, parents start to spend more time concerned with their kids rather than the contents of their phones and any other distraction, and money starts to get pumped into communities to help regeneration in a capital and social level, then we might start to see a change. When a kid is in public carrying a weapon, it's already too late. Hand wringing and warm words change nothing
