hackey lad
18 minutes ago, ads36 said: urban 20 zones reduce fuel consumption - it's physics. 1 unit of fuel will accelerate a car to 20mph. another whole unit of fuel is required to accelerate from 20-30. (KE = ½ MV^2) when we consider aerodynamic drag, accelerating to 30 burns more than twice as much fuel vs 20. given that we're talking about urban 20 zones, this extra fuel is completely wasted when the car decelerates/stops for the next junction/ lights/ queue. Just jumping on the 'climate' bandwagon again. Pathetic! Not many people would recognise that there is such a thing as a traffic lights+burger signs+climate 'bandwagon'. 1

Some junctions need this as it can never be safe without, but there's an awful lot that have no need for lights at 3am in the morning and would be perfectly safe to operate like any other non-lit junction. I think I'll recommend a similar move to our borough council, because I know I for one will immediately forget about the existence of fast food and other tasty, tasty lard items if I don't see them advertised around and about. Top job, SCC!
Vrsaljko
Yet more nanny state nonsense which doesn't do anything to solve the problem at hand. Meanwhile people still see these adverts anyway on TV and YouTube etc.

The problem with the lights is that they aren't sequenced in a sensible manner. Well the council have a team of people who work on that and a fancy traffic control centre where it’s all done from. Maybe it’s that they aren’t sequenced in the way you’d like, but perhaps there’s a good reason for it. Ever asked them about it?

I won't say they aren't trying to sort things, as I think they are. But while ever inexperienced people are making the big (bad) decisions, a lot more money will be wasted, and more, much needed services will be lost. Sort schools, sort council housing and repairs out properly before you're that bored, you come up with a great idea on banning things on a sign! There seem to be a lot of those eyes on here. But it's a forum, they are just as much entitled to their opinion as I am. Agree to disagree etc.

Yes, just like they are in the rest of the uk ( and world). Because national governments require them to be. The USA has some junctions that revert to flashing lights overnight and you give way etc, but there aren’t many. There are pedestrian crossings at traffic lights and some people need help to cross roads at all times, like people with visual impairments etc.
Michael_N
Good old Sheffield Council strike again. Guessing nothing will change come the May local elections, we know the average typical Sheffield voter…
SheffieldForum
I think some people will criticise literally anything the council does. 2 Sheffield Forum | The Sheffield Guide | The Sheffield Shop
