New Bus Gate Planned For Furnival Gate (Between Matilda Way And The Moor)

Imagine driving along an A road that gives way (stops) at every side road...

You say "between Brighton and Lewes", which sounds great, but this cycle route doesn't reach either Brighton or Lewes.

Instead, it runs between Firle, and the outskirts of Polegate - with little more than a few small villages in-between.

It's not a significant route, we can't expect significant numbers to use it.

.

And as predicted, it's shared use, and bi-directional, and too narrow.

.

It doesn't go anywhere, and it's not built to the recognised standards.

One of the chief reasons  that cyclists in Dearne Valley state as to why they use the road rather than the well maintained segragated cycleway is the very arguement of having to slow in preparation to give way at junctions if needed.

The issue with that is that the road ALSO has to slow in preparation to give way as each junction along the length of road are roundabouts which completely invalidates their argument.

For reference this segragated cycleway was installed after CYCLISTS raised safety concerns as it's an industrial area populated by many large warehouses and frequently serviced by HGVs.

I will reiterate something I've said before. There is no point to cycling infrastructure unless it's use is mandatory.

Just remember if you want to make your point of view, a good opportunity to send that message will be on 2nd May 2024.

If those who committed and implemented this polarising bus gate proposal being discussed here, are still in exactly the same positions of power on 3rd May 2024 then it says a lot.

All well and good whinging and whining on here, but how many people attended the meeting when this was proposed or raise questions with their counsellors or voiced objections.  How many will be voting out the present counsellors come next month. How many are actively looking and studying what the alternatives are offering.

Apathy always seems to be part of the problem.

Yes, it would say, 'it wasn't as polarising as some people on a local internet forum made it out to be'.

Actually, it would say 'if it wears a red rosette, it would get elected - even if it was a cockroach'.

Greens & Lib Dems have had plenty of success in this city at various levels over the years. Rarely based on the issue of bus gates in town, mind.

That is increasingly not true though (especially in local elections) - there are far more non-Labour councillors on the City Council than there are Labour ones.

Currently:

  • Labour – 30 (including 10 Labour and Co-operative)
  • Liberal Democrats – 29
  • Green – 14
  • Sheffield Community Councillors – 8
  • Conservative – 1
  • Vacancy – 1

If people continue to believe the misapprehension that only Labour will ever win then guess what - it increases the chances of Labour winning...

Have they ever actually run the council, though - apart from a brief period when the Liberals did, if my memory serves me correctly?

I'll give you that - you actually saved me checking - thanks. However, the LD's and Greens have some even weirder idea than Labour, and always vote in favour of the 'ruling' Party.

Apart from the short LD session referenced above, when has SCC not been Labour?

They are part running the council now. The present administration is a three-way coalition between greens, labour and liberal.

Before that it was a Labour-Greens tie up.

In fact, a quick look back at the 50 year history of SCC shows that there's been four different periods of no overall control and two periods where Liberal had full control.

This has been particularly prominent since 1999 onwards where Labour's dominance has been far more patchy.

Yes, thanks - I discovered that - thanks Wikipedia - about 20 minutes back, but have been busy on a different forum since.
