1920s 30s Prison

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know where a convicted female from Sheffield would be sent to in the late 1920s early 30s?

Her crime was I believe shoplifting and I know she spent time in a women's prison, family folklore says Manchester but I'm not sure.

Can't find any info on ancestry website so hopefully someone will point me in the right direction for information.

Thanks

It might be worth trying  Kew Records Office in London it's surprising on what is kept in the archives or Sheffield Archives. To help in you search make you have a full name her address and a rough year to go on.

Strangeways did have a female wing up until 1963, so maybe the folklore is correct.  Women from Sheffield were sent there for minor offences and even to be hanged.
