Trespassers Will Be Shot Sign

Is it a farm?

Pets can 'trespass' too and at this time of year it is illegal to have dogs off their leads where ground nesting birds could be or where animals can be distressed (which covers the vast majority of the Peak District!).

Believe it or not a farmer has every right (and is actually legally obliged) to shoot and kill someone's pet dog if it is trespassing and distressing livestock or wildlife and can't be controlled.

The sign may be for that purpose.

Not entirely correct.

Dogs must be on short lead on the 'open access areas" during this nesting season.

The law does not change if on a defined public footpath that may, or may not  pass through these areas and requires dogs to be under close control.

I was simplifying it.

If you ask me the law on it is unnecessarily confusing and most dog walkers just won’t understand it!

Also worth remembering is alot of jobs rural armed units get sent on are grumpy old farmers waving shotguns around at people.

While they may be legally allowed to shoot a dog under certain circumstances (and/or put up signs on their land) that doesn't exempt them from other laws regarding threatening behaviour, especially with a firearm.
