Preppers & Survivalists

Can't argue that there may be some like that.

Much of what i've seen/heard is people simply attempting to prepare for different situations. Like in most walks of life, there are extremes.

My bold

Exactly this 👆

We prepared for inevitable price increases and stock shortages.

As a result when many others were fighting over scraps we didn't need to leave the comfort of our own home.

Food and supplies were plentiful. For stocking up I was mocked by the naive but whatever, at least we had a healthy supply of bog roll 😁

True, but does that make a prepper? We stocked up on some 'from abroad' foodstuffs in preparation for Brexit, in case supplies were affected - olive oil, tinned tomatoes, stuff like that. Didn't need that stockpile for Brexit but it came in handy for Covid (should have got more olive oil in, it's almost doubled in price). But I don't see myself as a prepper or survivalist. Or are those very different things?

My bold.

Neither do I. To me stocking up was common sense considering what was on the horizon.

I wonder whether part of the attraction is the self-sufficiency rather than the apocalypse. Industrial and post-industrial capitalism turns us into specialists: someone might be really good at fixing cars but not at much else; someone else might understand law very well but nowt else. Our ancestors could build a house from scratch, grow their own food, butcher a cow and deliver a baby. Capitalism has made us rather pathetic by comparison and I can see the attraction of feeling able to cope should the system break down. Whereas a lot of survivalists, especially the right wing weapons enthusiasts, take an individual approach to this, there is also a more communal slant on it - communes that grow a lot of their own food and try to live outside the system as far as the system allows. Gerard Winstanley and the diggers were Christian communist survivalists of a sort.

Good points

We are such a soft lot. We are losing /have lost most skills necessary for long term survival.

Some people are no longer even able to cook from scratch. The wartime generation could tell us a lot about how to survive in extreme circumstances, but they too have mostly gone now.

There are increasing bodies of people attempting to live 'off grid' which I find quite appealing, and more people becoming environmentally aware, but surviving long term depends on building cooperative communities that work together, not stock piling tins, which is why the covid lockdown was so traumatic.

Indeed.

Some folk are just so entitled and have basically everything done for them, it's why the Gen Z generation are absolutely hopeless and start wailing as soon as something becomes a little difficult.

Lol, it goes back way before Gen Z. Advances in technology have simply accelerated the process, to the point where everyday items are no longer fixable because it's a PSB that's faulty or you can't open something up to fix it. This just pushes specialism more and more, to the point where hardly anyone has knowledge of a whole process. This is the stuff that William Morris railed against, the compartmentalization of the production of goods.

The spoilt entitled attitude of Gen Z is nothing to do with not being able to open your iPhone.

I find that generation nauseating at best and gosh they are so boring.

They probably view your generation as the ones who got all the wealth through the luck of being born at the right time, and who tell yourselves it was all because of your hard work. And they might have a point.
