Sheffield city centre revamp to take three years after costs double to £33m

Why do Sheffielders continue to put up with this shambolic council?

If this was a private corporation heads would roll, people would be fired etc.

Yet not if you work for the council, the taxpayer just ends up shouldering their incompetence.

When are people going to say enough is enough?

I see plenty of business cases for schemes in other council areas.

This one was costed in 2020 and construction costs have gone up massively since then.

It isn’t unusual to see costs doubling or more on the schemes I see.

Nothing to do with council competence. Just inflation.

Even at it's highest level in the last 4 years inflation hasn't reached 100%

Anyone who has had any building work done over the last few years will know prices have gone up ridiculously, especially since the start of Covid and after the effects of Brexit.

Everything is so much more expensive, from materials to labour — it’s across the board.

Having done plans and had building work done over the last few years I’ve seen similar increases in costs.

Yeah, we were ready to get our extension done just before Covid and then had to put our plans on ice. Got it done after Covid and the cost was nearly double because the disruption to complex logistics systems (containers stuck in ports the other side of the world, etc.) meant the cost of building materials had gone up massively. It was still cheaper than moving to a bigger house though.

Most (but not quite all) major projects overrun on time or cost (or both!)

Private sector ones too!

Why are these projects being installed?

bollards everywhere?

Are they anticipating future trouble from all the immigrants?

Fair enough pedestrian zones but bollards completely blocking ambulance routes?

why? I never wanted or needed this ?
