as someone who has food experience in sheffield city centre a while ago, it simply will not work people will not pay the prices certainly at first it should go well as its new and a novelty, the quality will tell once its been open a while can they  continue it ???  there simply isnt the interest in Sheffield city centre to sustain this , its a shame as it looks great but Sheffield is not Manchester or london or Birmingham even leeds come to that, thats where it needs to be .

we visit a similar place in Dubai when we go there and the place is rammed full from the minute it opens to the end with a selection of over 40 vendors, dont think there are more than 10 here ??

Oh really.

Cutleryworks has been running since November 2018 and was voted UK best food hall for two years running.

Kommune opened in March 2019 and despite decimated trade during the pandemic is still going today.

Sheffield Plate is coming up to its third year running.

If us Sheffielders have no interest and will not pay the prices in these things we have a funny way of showing it.

That 'novelty' is certainly taking a long time to wear off.

How are Kommune and Sheffield Plate not in the city centre? 🤔

Anyway, whilst there may be some vague truths to what you say, let's just take stock of a few things. First all, despite what people like to believe about Sheffield city centre - and it's in no doubt a poor relation compared to Leeds for example - it does still see large amounts of people use it every day, week, month. Residents, workers, shoppers, people out for drinking/eating, entertainment etc., all still use the city centre in large numbers.

Secondly, if anything, these food halls help out businesses with cheaper overheads, compared to a like-for-like stand-alone restaurant. Shared building and front-of-house staff costs, co-operative marketing, not to mention the draw of the additional aspects like the entertainment, the cookery class spaces etc, things that would be so much more expensive if these were 20 brand-new stand alone restaurant units for example.

If there is a limit to the demand for these kinds of places, it is most likely to be Kommune which suffers and falls by the wayside, not CSC. Though it has closer proximity to West Bar & Riverside offices, it's much more isolated from the night-time economy (West St/Kelham Island/Neepsend), shoppers (The Moor), and local residents (the Castlegate area remains lacking in the urban regeneration stakes), and it's also not been run particularly well for years.

CSC as a much more centrally-located site is always going to be able to tap in those markets, and as it's run by the same people as Cutlery Works and other food halls, I'd say Blend know what the limitations of the market look like.

Think you need to learn some geography.

Since when was Castle House and Orchard Square not in the city centre.

We're currently sat in The Head of Steam pub on Norfolk St.

Plenty of people eating & drinking.  One look at their menu, a choice of 10 burgers, fries included, prices are £14.75 to 15.75 each.  Of course people are buying drinks before hand, during & after.

You can get a salad for £4 to £5, if you want to go cheaper.

Having looked at the prices that SF has previously posted, I reckon they're compatible & those in Cambridge St will have done their price research if they have any business sense.

Good luck to them.   It's nice to have the variety on our doorstep.  We'll certainly be giving it a go.

Although there is a limit to how many food halls the city centre can sustain (I agree Kommune looks the most at risk), I think dining habits have changed and food halls are here to stay. The obvious advantage is that a large party can have all dietary preferences and needs met, there is loads of choice so you won't get bored of coming back, you pay up front so there's no hassles about splitting the bill, people can arrive late or leave early without issue, and although the food isn't cheap, you're generally not tipping.

My kids are like Jack Spratt and his wife, so trying to find a traditional restaurant that has a decent amount to offer in the middle of the Venn diagram of what we all eat is hard work, whereas a food hall works a treat.

The Star's paid a visit.

What I don't understand is that Sheffield now has the LARGEST FOOD HALL IN EUROPE but while the nation has been listening to news reports for weeks, (fair enough not all good), that Manchester has the largest indoor arena in the UK, there's not been a mention of us having the LARGEST FOOD HALL IN EUROPE on any national media outlet.

Doesn’t SCC have a press office?  Isn't this sort of thing that SCC's CEO Kate Josephs should be touting to the World & putting the word out there?

I'd guarantee that if a similar venture had been started in London, Paris, Berlin or Rome, we in Sheffield would know about it via the MSM.

There have been LOTS of press releases, and some outlets have picked them up whilst some haven't. It has been mostly regional pickups.

It just isn't a very exciting story for some of the national news, especially when there's so much other stuff going on.

I suspect we wouldn't have heard anywhere near as much of Manchester's new arena had it not had so much negativity around it either.
