Only working class?

Some people say that you can be wealthy and working class, others say not.

I disagree with the idea that the Labour Party should only be represented by the working class. The Bloomsbury Set and other middle class intellectuals were also important in setting up the Labour Party at the end of the 19th Century.

I think some people get really hung up about class - that you can't be a proper Labour Person unless you live in poverty, and have to use Izal to wipe your bum.

Would a proper socialist take the Qatar millions to represent them as Neville did in the obscene World cup ,   I mean proper working people who grafted on building sites in some instances did not get paid ,  A proper socialist would have told the Arabs where to stick their ill-gotten gains .  And stuck up for poor people

There's a saying that I think is aposite:

"the right looks for converts, the left looks for traitors".

That probably explains why the Tories have been in power much more than Labour.

Well as the referendum  to alter the voting system was defeated by nearly two to one, would'nt be optimistic

The alternative offered was AV, another flawed system. Voters went with ' the devil you know ' option,  which was both anticipated and wanted by the political parties who are favoured by FPTP..

The fairest, most democratic voting system as yet devised which provides the closest possible result to the expressed wishes of the electorate is PR+STV,  a voting system which has been used in the Northern Ireland part of the UK since 1973.

Why wasn't that the alternative offered?  Maybe because you can't compare our existing not fit for purpose system with PR+STV, and if that system was used politicians might actually have to do their job and reach agreements which most of us would go along with?

Of the 43 countries in Europe 40 use some form of PR. The only reason we don't is because this country isn't a democracy in the true sense of the word.

In the UK  parliament is sovereign, not the people. Parliament can make laws and impose them on the people and there is nothing to stop them.

In a genuine democracy there is a written agreed  constitution which constrains the state from imposing draconian laws, the people are sovereign, and the constitution cannot be changed without their agreement.

In the UK we are at the mercy of the government in power and their intentions. If those intentions are honourable and intended to be in the interests of the country all is well. On the other hand if some self serving greedy charlatans should gain power by virtue of our antiquated and non democratic voting system we might have a problem.

Thankfully all our recent politicians have displayed the highest moral code self sacrifice and determination to put the country's interests first.

So we can rest easy 👍

I think that’s down to the electorate.
