Proportional Representation is the most popular voting system in the world, It's the fairest representation of the wishes of the people as yet devised.  A democracy is supposed to listen to the wishes of the people.

This country hasn't had a single party government since WW2 that has managed to win 50% of votes cast. In this country Parliament is sovereign, not the people, so decisions are taken by people who have had more votes cast against their party than for it. In 2005 Blair won a workable majority despite his party only winning 35.2% of all votes cast.

In 2011 when a choice of a different voting system was offered the government chose the flawed AV as the alternative. They did that because they wanted to retain FPTP which suits them.

PR+STV has been in operation in Northern Ireland since 1973 for all local elections. Northern Ireland is in the UK so why wasn't PR+STV the alternative choice in 2011?

Perhaps because the British government hold the electorate in contempt and prefer to suit themselves?

You mention democracy but the trouble is that Starmer is undemocratic and that's the main thing I don't like about him.  He wanted to overturn a democratically decided vote by the public on brexit and also barred Jeremy Corbyn from re-standing, which should be up to the people. Doesn't matter whether you wanted brexit or not or whether you like Corbyn or not, it's anti democracy.  Also with the Ester Rantzen issue on euthanasia he just said, "If I get into power I will pass it".  That's it, no debate.

It's going to take all of that time just to put right all the things the Torries have done, if it's even possible. I fear it's too late. Add to that all the problems coming up in the pipe line and no money to do it with, and they're going to be very busy.

What an uphill task...

Sound like a barrowboy, get your excuses rollup 5 for  a pound get your lovely excuses, fresh in today.

No money? Have they abolished Taxes or have I missed something?

Rishi Sunak scored a fatal own goal yesterday by announcing the general election to be held on 4th July.  He has proved he has no conviction.  The Rwanda plan still has not been implemented.  He has not trusted his own judgement that the economy is on the right path and things will continue to move in the right direction which if is correct would have made the Autumn a better time to hold the general election.  Boris Johnson had the conviction to back his beliefs when he did everything in his power to get Brexit done.  It was an own goal by the Tory MPs to remove Boris Johnson from office when there was never a replacement waiting in the wings who could match his popularity.  All was still not lost until yesterday.  Rishi Sunak has effectively handed the keys of Downing Street to Keir Starmer on a plate.  It is not good for our country that the election will be won by default and not because the Labour party is offering any viable alternatives.

I agree with some of that, Labour would win when ever the GE was held, but holding it sooner just means Sunak will be free for his summer holidays.

Under Rishi Sunak the UK has become the number-one destination for immigrants, with the latest figures showing net immigration @ 685,000 in the year ending Dec. 2023, the economy has been poor, dodgy contracts during COVID given out by Sunak, massive borrow - the highest in 40 years etc
