‘No plans’ to raise council tax but Rayner does not rule out discounts cut

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/politics/angela-rayner-graham-stuart-conservative-housing-labour-b1179634.html

Are Labour deliberately trying to alienate everyone they can?  I was hoping the Labour victory would be another "things can only get better" moment. But they appear to be getting worse.

Rayner is not a council leader, she is an MP, so of course she has no plans to increase council tax.

Don't you know what councillors/MPs are responsible for?

So, Simon Case - too ill to attend the Covid enquiry to answer some difficult questions -  suddenly does a Lazarus and returns to work, just so he can slate the Tories.

No doubt hoping for a New Year's honour or a spell in the Lords when he retires!

She's the Deputy PM and also  the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government

What's being suggested is that Labour will end the 25% discount for people living alone which of course will increase the Council tax for those now receiving it. They should never have promised not to raise income tax as it's the fairest form of tax, being progressive.

The Government can cap council tax rises, which is one reason they are all skint. Local authorities set their own rates. Wes Streeting claims that Labour councils charge £329 less on average than those led by Conservatives.

I don't think a Conservative Government would allow that.
