Trump is no chess player, he hasn't the capacity.  What Putin wants is an isolationist America leaving the field open for him and his pal Xi Jinping.

Without American international involvement China gets Taiwan and Russia gets what it wants in Eastern Europe.

There is evidence of Russian interference in the US election in support of Trump.

Trump will have been instructed to wind his neck in and make sure he doesn't annoy his red neck Commie hating supporters. 

Putin wants Trump re-elected as that will suit his purposes. Putin also wanted Brexit ,  it played into his plans, It weakened the UK and also weakened the EU. A report published in July 2020 by the Intelligence and Security Committee of parliament concluded that Russian interference in UK politics is commonplace.
