Why do folk get so wound up about parents driving their kids to school? I don't get it.

You would if you were not part of the school commute but stuck in it as a consequence.

Abbeydale Primary School, the entrance is on a side road, Glen Rd.

Trouble was parents were bringing their children to school by car, insisting on dropping them off at the school gate, (not a simple operation when it involves small children, strapped into seats, taking their time, having to be escorted by said parent into the school grounds), resulting in a queue of traffic down Glen Rd, backing on to a main city centre arterial road, Abbeydale Rd, preventing the flow of cars & public transport, holding up thousands of people heading towards the town centre for work.

What makes you think I'm part of the school commute?

Folk seem to think kids should walk or catch the bus, but kids don't necessarily live near their schools like they used to when I was a kid in the 70's. Kids nowadays might not be able to get into their local school due to over subscription and instead have to travel to the other end of the city. Naturally the parents would rather take them so they get there safely.

We live 3 mins drive away from the school my son used to go. to, yet I would often be leaving for work at the same time that he was leaving for school, so I'd often drop him off in the car. It gave us a rare few minutes alone together to have a quick chat as I often wouldn't be home from work to see him again until later the following day.

When I was a kid I used to walk to school as all the other kids did, but back then parents didn't all have a car each and my dad would have taken our car to work. Had my mum had a car then maybe she would have driven me. I just don't see the problem.

The vast majority of children live local to their school, and those that don’t can generally get there by bus.

The problem with it is that it is a short, unnecessary car journey that not only blocks up roads for legitimate longer journeys at peak times (just see how traffic changes during school holidays), it contributes significantly to the climate crisis.

Having a car does not entitle you to use it for every single journey, however short or unnecessary.

But, I suspect you are aware of those arguments.

Doesn't it? So people aren't allowed to use their own cars as they please?

Folk can do whatever journeys they want in their cars. I certainly do.

And that makes you part of the problem

What problem am I part of just because I don't mind parents driving their kids to school? And if I did mind, how would I then not be part of this problem you refer to? How does what a person think contribute to causing or solving this problem?

My bold

Unfortunately it does though. Also, who decides if a journey is too short or unnecessary?

What are the criteria?
