Sheffield: a crucible for left-field culture and regeneration (The Guardian)

But the problem remains that people in Sheffield are as tight as a ducks arse.

Imagine some people on this forum going to Domo for a meal ffs.

Sweeping generalisation and not actually that representative nowadays.

Domo (and lots of similar places) is full most weekends.

There’s an argument that Sheffield was held back for many years by the fear of being ‘too expensive’ — than a bunch of nice restaurants came along, started filling seats and people began catching on that we were actually missing quality and mid-to-upper tier food establishments.

We’re still missing that elusive Michelin star in the city currently — but are starting to come close and have a couple of entries in the Michelin guide now.

Meanwhile — there are a subsection of people who think complain for complaining’s sake is cool still, everything is the council’s fault and we’re not as good as other places but god forbid if anyone starts to change and improve things because then it isn’t the same as before and isn’t targeted specifically at them, even though they wouldn’t use it anyway (generalisation too, of course).

The obvious thing missing from the article (because it's missing from Sheffield) is a good, medium sized music venue. The 02 was bland and had a very conservative booking policy but you could at least see acts the stature of Orbital or Self Esteem there, but now even that has gone we are left with the good but small venues in the article and the soulless Arena. I know live music is struggling generally at the moment because people's budgets are tight, but it would be good if Sheffield had a good venue for when that changes.

True, but most of those people are circling the drain now - perhaps a different, more forward looking mindset will come after.

Thats a good point. Thankfully places like The Octagon are getting used more again now (a great venue!), but you’re right, that mid-size venue is lacking in Sheffield now — and there’s no sight or word on the O2 ever reopening that I’ve heard of as yet.

Yeah I can't see the 02 reopening, probably not worth spending the money on what was already a fairly decrepit building.
