Mortar or Lime Mortar?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I'm considering doing some pointing on the front of the house.

I get conflicting advice online so I thought I'd stay online and ask you lot instead of Google.

So, will regular mortar do or is lime mortar the way to go?

Cheers in advance.

Oops, almost forgot.

Your thoughts?

It depends on what you house is built with, cement motar is a no no for stone built houses.

Have a read of 5his thread as someone has a similar question to yours=

Cheers for the link mafya.

Much obliged 👍

My house is very old but definitely made with brick not stone. I've attached a picture

So looks like regular mortar will do the trick.

Cheers again fella 👍

Lime mortar is mostly for heritage properties and is more difficult to work with than the regular stuff.

Thank you for that matey. I'm gonna grab a bag from wickes and crack on.

Cheers again Tops 🙏

Lime mortar seems to have been more in the news recently, or maybe it's a coincidence. I'm sure I've read of older brick built houses that needed to be pointed with lime mortar.

I seem to remember that if  bricks are crumbling and 'flaking' on the surface  it's a sign that cement based mortar has been applied rather than lime based. I think that the  crumbling and 'flaking' can be seen on lower courses of the property. The flaking and crumbling is known as "Spallin" - comprehensive guide linked below.

Thank you Draggletail

I'm not sure if any brickwork is flaking so I'll check in the morning.

Thank you for the link

To say it's only about bricks it's surprisingly interesting 😁
