Sheffield has been shortlisted for the prestigious City of the Year award as part of the EG Awards. This accolade celebrates UK cities and their efforts to create successful, liveable environments.

The EG Awards honour achievements in the real estate sector and the positive impact it has on communities.

Kate Martin, Executive Director of City Futures, expressed her delight at the nomination:

“We are delighted Sheffield has been nominated for City of the Year and that the EG Awards recognise the collaborative work the city is doing with its communities, businesses and city partners to make a positive contribution for Sheffield’s people, the city’s prosperity, and the planet we all share.

“We’re continuing to work hard to enable our neighbourhoods and businesses to thrive, whilst recognising the diversity of our communities, and providing a range of safe and welcoming open spaces, services, and homes which are fit for purpose to support the lives of our residents.

“The Council has worked closely with many partners across Sheffield to develop the City Goals, to challenge itself and others and to collectively play a role in making effective and impactful change in the city and its role regionally, nationally and internationally.

“It is brilliant to see these efforts are being noticed and recognised.”

This nomination highlights the significant efforts and collaborative work being done to make Sheffield a better place to live and work.

Erm. Excuse my ignorance but who are EG and what are their awards? Are they like the Good Food/Hotel awards which are just paid for publicity in glossy magazines or is it a genuinely independent body awarding on merit?

EG - Estates Gazette.

Looks like a lot of commercial real estate companies just dishing out pointless awards?

One of the judges is the CEO of Hammersons.  Remember them & the Sevenstones redevelopment fiasco on The Moor.  I wouldn't accept anything off that lot.

Maybe if we do win an award we'll have to wait several years to get it & at the last moment, Hammersons will tell SCC they can't have it despite the promises!

Hold you hard there ECCOnoob. I’m proud of having been bred and born in Sheffield, but an award that’s been “sponsored” by some kind of commercial outfit for nowt more than profit and publicity ain’t worth the pound notes it’s printed on.

Most awards are sponsored by some form of commercial outfit. That's generally how they work. They've always been nothing more than a big PR exercise or marketing drive. It's business.

Doesn't detract from the fact that getting one or even getting some recognition of being shortlisted for one all helps boost the city profile, gets the name out there, and gets up that publicity, which let's be frank, if it went to a different city, people would be whining about for missing out.

This place can't seem to win no matter what it does.

Come on ECCOnoob. Credit most people with some intelligence. They see through sponsored awards and ignore them. Don’t they?

Publicity is great but an independent award that isn’t reliant on “sponsorship” is worth a lot more.

What City of the Year award would that be then, to satisfy your criteria?\\

Jesus Christ. Yeah, that's the spirit everyone.

Most places would be quite celebratory of getting the recognition and shortlist position for such type of awards, but of course this is Sheffielders so it's moan moan cry whinge moan...

The comments under The Star article are even worse. Honestly makes you wonder why they bother with us at all sometimes.

If we win, IF, how will it change your life?
