What is the solution to UK prisons running out of room?

Recommended Posts

We must be ridiculed by the rest of the world. The issue has been ongoing for quite a while.  Has the justice minister been sleeping on the job?

"Jails will run out of space within days, putting the public at risk, the body representing 95% of prison governors in England and Wales is warning political leaders".

The Prison Governors’ Association (PGA) says police officers will be unable to detain people because there will be nowhere to put them.

“The entire criminal justice system stands on the precipice of failure,” it says in a letter.

Get back to treating prisons like prisons and stop people deliberately committing crimes to get back inside.

Could all of the asylum seekers etc be put to work instead of being kept in hotels, barges and detention centers, freeing up space for the crims?

The number of people that we jail has gone from 40,000 in 1990 to 80,000 today.

Is prison working? The answer to that is no, we need to jail fewer people.

Build some new prisons?

The population of the country has been ever increasing, which means the number of prisoners will follow.  You've gotta build somewhere for them all to go.

A lot of pensioners commit crime just before winter sets in hoping for a 3 month sentence.

If their successful, they get free food in a warm environment, swift medical attention, a cell with all the mod-cons and access to a gym if needed.

What's not to like..

We still hear about  repeat offenders. Surely the system is not working. I suspect the 'do gooders' must shoulder the blame of failure.

The 'do gooders' would argue we should have a system like Norway that, successfully, focuses on reducing reoffending. Those at the opposite end of the scale would howl in protest at such a thing because they think severity of punishment is more important than reducing reoffending.
