I'm sure your wife must have appreciated having her family around her as she passed away. But it's not always the case. A relative of mine died while alone. She had 24 /7 company whilst enduring her last days. Someone always at her side in the hospice. But she died while the person sitting with her was temporarily called out of the room to speak to the Consultant. They were devastated, but talking to the nurse she said it was actually incredibly common that a person slips away quietly when the opportunity arises ie. while they are alone. She said the sitter seems to 'bind' them to this earth even when they know it's time to go. The nurse believed it was because they couldn't bare to see the distress they 'inflict' on the sitter when they actually die, and need some space to commune with whoever 'comes for them.' Maybe that's fanciful, but this nurse had attended many dying people (She specialised in end of life care,) and seen many strange things.

I've read other reports from end of life nurses like, or similar to this.

I’ve seen people when dying suddenly sit up and turn towards the door, holding their arms out towards an unseen figure to the nurses, but causes the dying patient to smile, lay down again, then pass away a few minutes later.

This seems to be fairly common, from what I've read. Has seeing events like this led you to believe that we 'carry on' after death, that consciousness survives death? What brought everything into existence, is taking you 'out'.
