Decision to be made on new Aldi supermarket on Penistone Road, Hillsborough

Detailed plans for new developments, including an Aldi supermarket, drive-through restaurants, and additional units in Hillsborough, will be reviewed by Sheffield City Council’s planning committee on Tuesday, July 8. The application seeks permission to build commercial and food outlets at the junction of Herries Road, Herries Road South, and Penistone Road North.

Project Overview

The redevelopment project is divided into two parts. The northern section will feature an Aldi supermarket with a total internal area of 1,910 square metres, alongside access roads, parking, a servicing area, and landscaping. The southern section is slated for flexible-use units for storage, distribution, or trade, two drive-through restaurants, one drive-through coffee shop, one retail unit, a trade or retail unit, and an electric vehicle charging hub.

Planning Committee Recommendations

The planning committee's report recommends granting permission for the plans, subject to extensive conditions. The five-hectare site is currently used occasionally for matchday parking at Sheffield Wednesday’s ground. Previous plans for the site have evolved over the years, with the latest application being the third variation. Earlier permissions included a mix of retail units, storage and distribution units, drive-throughs, and a gym.

Objections and Concerns

The council has received 129 objections to the proposals. Concerns raised by residents and local councillors include potential traffic issues, impact on local businesses, ecological considerations, and the effect on active travel routes.

 

Stocksbridge and Upper Don ward councillor Julie Grocutt, former ward colleague Lewis Chinchen, and all three Hillsborough ward councillors, Christine Gilligan Kubo, Toby Mallinson, and Ruth Milsom, have objected to the development.

Impact on Cycling Infrastructure

Campaign group CycleSheffield has strongly opposed the plans, highlighting that the proposed development would significantly degrade the existing cycle route on Penistone Road. According to Dexter Johnstone of CycleSheffield, the Penistone Road cyclepath is one of the few fully separated cycle routes in Sheffield and is heavily used by cyclists. The proposed changes would force cyclists to share a narrow pavement with pedestrians, contradicting the council’s goals to improve active travel routes. The previous application for the site included mandatory conditions for upgrading pedestrian and cyclist crossings, but the current application does not include such improvements.

Absolutely stinking scheme from a transportation point of view.

 

Rides roughshod over any potential improvements that could have been made to cycling and pedestrian infrastructure on Penistone Road, in fact makes both worse by shoving them in the same space.

 

Also, just a generally car-centric development which will encourage more car trips in an already congested area.

 

Absolutely laughable. Hope no one who uses it ever has the audacity to claim they have any concerns about environmental issues or even just the nerve to complain about traffic congestion. They'd be hypocrites if they do.

Barely a 5 minute drive between this one and the existing Aldi (just off) Penistone Road, under 2 miles.

Amazingly some people are  still capable of using Shanks's pony when shopping.

 

always an outcry whenever there's a new development in S6, Lidl at Malin bridge all that uproar and you never  hear anything that site now.

As long as somebody knocks down that eyesore structure on the corner of Penistone Road and Herries Road (the thing with the chimneys, think it used to be a garage), I don't care what goes there - it's got to be an improvement.

I thought this had already been approved a few months back? Personally I prefer the old Art Decco petrol station (latter Charlie Browns I think?). It would have made an excellent cafe/vehicle enthusiast meet up point

It's been in planning ages, I thought permission was given a long time ago

what are the concerns about the impact on local businesses there is already in spitting distance a large Sainsburys and a Morrisons

 

Great idea keep a big space empty so it can be used 20 or so afternoons and a few evenings a year

 

How would it degrade the existing cycle infrastructure apart from cyclists having an extra red light or so and anyway don't forget that many cyclists don't even bother to use the cycle paths provided

A version of it was approved a couple of years back, but it has been amended since and the new plans are up at the planning committee next week.

Not to mention all this is being built on a flood plain.

It spells disaster for the next flooding and they will be one.
