With Tramlines Festival set to take place from 26th to 28th July, organisers have unveiled a series of community-focused initiatives aimed at nurturing local talent, supporting environmental sustainability, and boosting local businesses.

Investment in Hillsborough Park

As part of their commitment to enhancing Sheffield’s green spaces, Tramlines has donated £5,000 to fund the planting of new trees in Hillsborough Park. The trees will be planted during the winter tree planting season in Autumn 2024, with guidance from Sheffield City Council's Community Forestry Team. They will work with local community and Friends of groups to determine the best planting locations.

Cllr Richard Williams, Chair of the Charity Trustee Sub-committee at Sheffield City Council, praised the festival's broader impact: “The benefits of Tramlines to the city goes beyond music, culture and exposure. The festival organisers raise funds for Sheffield-based charities, offer work placements to local people and students, donate tickets to local communities, and offer paid opportunities to local and emerging artists. All of this, along with the additional donation for new trees to be planted in Hillsborough Park is welcomed.”

Support for Young Musicians

In collaboration with WaterBear Music College, Tramlines has introduced a new three-year scholarship at the college’s newly established Sheffield campus. The scholarship will cover tuition for a BA course, aiming to empower aspiring musicians with quality education and opportunities. This initiative is part of Tramlines' broader efforts to support young residents and education, including hands-on shadowing experiences with the technical production and press teams, and behind-the-scenes tours for journalism students at the University of Sheffield.

Economic Boost for Local Businesses

Tramlines continues to promote local businesses through the ‘Hillsborough Hotspots’ guide, which showcases local establishments to festival-goers. Additionally, the festival has provided subsidised stalls for local traders in the ‘Little Hillsborough’ area, ensuring they have the necessary infrastructure to participate.

An independent study in 2023 showed that the festival contributes £3.8 million annually to the Sheffield economy.

Ticket Distribution Initiatives

Maintaining its tradition of community engagement, Tramlines collaborates with Sheffield company Tickets for Good to distribute free tickets to NHS staff, charity workers, and those affected by the cost-of-living crisis. This initiative helps extend the festival’s reach and accessibility, allowing more community members to enjoy the event. The festival also distributes a significant number of free and discounted tickets to local residents.

Continued Community Support

Timm Cleasby, Operations Director of Tramlines, expressed his commitment to supporting the Sheffield community: "We are always looking for ways to keep Tramlines supporting the Sheffield community. I love the little touches like school tea towels produced by Hillsborough Primary School, which feature the kid’s drawings of our bands. I’m pleased we’ve found ways to support local businesses at the festival, improve the park, and provide a brilliant scholarship opportunity with WaterBear.”

As Tramlines approaches, these initiatives highlight the festival’s ongoing efforts to benefit Sheffield’s community, environment, and economy.

Why is Catchbar Lane going to be closed for 10 days to accommodate this? I don't think that happened last year. The disruption caused by this event just keeps getting worse and worse.

It’s not closed by Tramlines. Looking at the application Catchbar Lane is to become one way for up to 10 days for Cadent to carry out works to a gas main.

Apparently academy put the wrong dates on the signs and the roadworks on Catch Bar Lane are from the 29th (after Tramlines).

Well that makes a bit more sense. I didn't think even our council would close it for roadworks while tramlines is on.

All hot air, the biggest boost to local businesses would be to let festival goers have the freedom to come and go as they wish rather than pay the inflated prices for food and drink within.

Maybe.

But it is unarguable that there is A boost from people arriving throughout the day via Hillsborough venues.

Not everyone arrives at once, and throughout the whole day (and weekend) there is a clear and tangible benefit to local businesses that far outweighs if the festival wasn’t on.

When the festival moved to Hillsborough Park it was sold on the back of people being able to go in and out at will to benefit local businesses, then it was snateched away a few years later, they will benefit to a degree but not as much as promised.
