SheffieldForum Posted July 19 Share Posted July 19 A new craft beer bar could soon open on Fargate, Sheffield, as part of ongoing efforts to rejuvenate the city centre street. Fargate Tap Ltd has submitted a licence application to offer late-night refreshments at 66 Fargate until 1am from Monday to Saturday. Revitalising a Historic Location The premises, formerly occupied by Yorkshire Bank, closed in October 2020 following a merger with Virgin Money. Pivovar’s Expansion The application comes from York-based Pivovar, known for its popular venues including Sheffield Tap, Harrogate Tap, and Tapped Leeds. If approved, the new bar is expected to significantly enhance Fargate’s appeal, which is transitioning from a traditional retail hub to a vibrant food, drink, and cultural destination. A Boost for Fargate Fargate has seen a decline in retail prominence but is undergoing a multi-million-pound refurbishment to reinvent itself. The refurbishment is part of Sheffield City Council’s broader plan to transform the city centre, supported by a £15.8 million grant from the Future High Streets Fund. The fund aims to reshape UK high streets into vibrant social hubs. Investment and Community Engagement The Fargate revitalisation includes several key projects. "Event Central" will be a six-storey community hub featuring entertainment, culture, art, and co-working spaces. It aims to attract over 110,000 visitors annually. The street scene is also being transformed with new landscaping, green planting, seating areas, and lighting, inspired by Sheffield’s award-winning Grey to Green project. ReNew Grants Available Additionally, the council is offering grants of up to £35,000 to businesses willing to occupy and revitalise empty shops in the area. This initiative, part of the ReNew project, is designed to support local businesses and further enhance Fargate’s transformation. Councillor Ben Miskell, Chair of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee, stated, “Fargate has long been known as a vibrant and social part of the city centre and we’re looking to continue that with the fantastic regeneration work we have currently taking place there.” Community Response The council’s efforts have already seen success stories such as Juno Books and Game Show All-stars, both of which benefited from ReNew funding to establish themselves in central locations.
