It’s ironic that when you retire your income decreases and your outgoings often increase. echo. Yes, I agree. My partner's parents (elderly and frail) got the special tariff which was a godsend because even with the thermostat set at 25C his dad was still always cold. Why are people labouring under some kind of misaphrension that all pensioners are skint? 27% of pensioners are millionaires ffs. What about young people who are skint and need to put the heating on, should they get to pay less too? Most of that 27% are only millionaires because of the value of their homes. It's a poor choice for the new government to remove winter fuel allowance for all pensioners. Salt is rubbed into many pensioners wounds by the new government choosing to give an Indian owned steel company £500 million and to give the Ukraine another £600 million.

Why should the rest of us have to chip in because someone wants to live inside a terrarium? The boiler must be going like the clappers to keep a house at 25 degrees, the gas bill must get delivered on the back of a low loader. The cottage is in France. It was just a general point, that abolishing standing charges would help second home owners, who aren’t the ones who need helping. To be fair the second home owners are hardly the ones on the edge of poverty as they have a second home, but you acknowledge that. Didnt know the location of the cottage, was trying to assist. This was a 92 year old war hero, unable to get out of his seat without help, all skin and bones, with a heart condition and taking blood thinners. His hands were like ice. Some people really do feel the cold.

I’m not being unsympathetic here, but try a heated blanket rather than cranking up the thermostat quite so far.
