Very surprised at this news. I know the building is old and in need of modernisation  - but it always looks busy and would be a big blow after losing Wilkos and then it's replacement in Poundland.

Hillsborough's B&M Store Could Make Way for New Flats

A significant redevelopment is being proposed for the site of the B&M store on Middlewood Road in Hillsborough, Sheffield. The current building, which also houses the Fun House Play Centre, is under consideration for demolition to make way for up to 70 new apartments.

 

Developers DPP and Triple Jersey Ltd have put forward plans for the transformation, suggesting that the existing 1961 structure is outdated and no longer serves the community's needs. They aim to replace it with a modern, attractive development that would not only bring new residents to the area but also potentially retain the B&M store if the retailer chooses to remain.

 

The proposal includes a new retail unit, alongside associated landscaping, parking, and service areas. The developers are currently seeking public feedback before submitting an outline planning application. They describe the project as an opportunity to contribute to the vibrancy of Hillsborough, a district known for its bustling community and thriving local businesses.

 

The site has a long history, with the building originally serving as a Co-Operative Food superstore since the 1960s. The Co-operative refurbished part of the site in the late 1980s and added various concessions, including Burton's Menswear, Dorothy Perkins, and a large electrical department. In the 1990s/2000s, the store also housed the main Hillsborough Post Office.

 

The B&M store took over the site in 2013 after the Co-Operative vacated the premises. The current redevelopment proposal represents a significant change for the area, reflecting broader trends in urban development and the increasing demand for residential spaces in key locations.

 

A spokesperson for the developers stated, "The redevelopment aims to create a space that is modern, attractive, and will bring new residents to contribute to the vibrancy of Hillsborough. The existing building is no longer fit for purpose, and this project offers an opportunity to revitalise the area with new housing and potentially a new retail store."

If it goes ahead, I can foresee the complaints a few years down the line with residents moaning about the noise of the Supertram rumbling past.
