Talking to my siblings a few years ago and it came up that none of us never had  a new bike .  We used to build our own . Bits a pieces from all over .Probably why we all grew up handy at DIY and fixing things .

My first bike was a red second hand “racing bike” ,a Raleigh with 5 speed derailleur gears.I had it and used it from being around 12 yrs old to late teens when I started driving.I went everywhere on it

However me and my mates also built our own “Track Bikes from bits and pieces with cow horn handle bars and a low fixed gear that could be lethal. We probably had mor fun building them than riding them around a local bomb site.

I learned to ride on a little 2 wheel Tri-Ang.  Moved on to a Tomahawk & finished off with a 10 speed Puch Cavalier that my dad bought from a bike shop somewhere on Infirmary Rd.

He actually rode it all the way home, bless him.

Found an advert.
Advert

Sk57 Ephemera 1950s Advert Pink Witch Bicycle

I remember them Cressida.

They were made by Raleigh and aimed at teenage girls. I think they were painted in shocking pink and peacock blue and in later years had mirrors and a shopping basket on the front. According to the ad they cost 22 guineas in the ‘50s which was expensive.

I never had one. I was put off by the lipstick holder!😆

echo.
