Sheffield to Implement Traffic Restrictions for Safer School Streets

In a move to enhance safety for school children, several streets in Sheffield will be closed to traffic during drop-off and pick-up times. This initiative aims to create safer environments around local schools.

Streets Affected

The temporary road closures will affect areas surrounding Broomhill Infants, Mundella Primary, Pye Bank Primary, Pipworth Community Primary, and Hunters Bar Infants. These measures are part of a broader plan to improve safety and reduce congestion during peak times.

Increased Funding for School Streets

Sheffield City Council has significantly increased its budget for school street projects from £203,700 to £530,000 to support these changes. The decision was confirmed during a recent council meeting.

Pedestrian Improvements and Feasibility Studies

In addition to school street closures, the council has approved spending £57,000 of government funding on feasibility studies. These studies will explore potential pedestrian improvements on Handsworth Grange Road, Crookes Valley Road, and Abbeydale Road.

Traffic Filters and Crossing Enhancements

Traffic filters, designed to limit vehicle access, will be introduced on several streets. These include Mona Avenue near Westways Primary School, as well as Newent Lane, Hands Road, and Greenhow Street in Crookes. Furthermore, a temporary crossing at the junction of Crookesmoor Road and Conduit Road will be made permanent and converted into a zebra crossing.

Promoting Walking and Cycling

A scheme to encourage walking and cycling on Penistone Road will receive £390,000 in funding. This investment will enhance the cycle lane and pavements from Rutland Road through to Claywheels Lane. The council will also consider extending the cycle lane and improving walking routes from Claywheels Lane to Yewlands Academy. Additionally, the creation of cycle links from Walkley, Hillsborough, Southey, and Parson Cross is under consideration.

The Penistone Road one is odd, seeing as the council just approved supermarket plans for the end of Penistone Road that completely remove the cycle lane!

my mother in law is 70.

 

In May we took her on a cycling holiday in Austria. Over the week we rode more than 200km, with at least 3000metres of climbing.
