All long term elderly care is provided by the 30+ private sector homes, apart from three specialist units part funded by the NHS, these places only deal with referred NHS patients. In the private homes a minority might get some NHS and/or Social services funding, otherwise it comes out of their income, assets and savings. There is no 'cap' on the maximum. There are no clear divisions between types of care home and placement is down to the individual, relative, carer or social services. All care/nursing homes need a funding arrangement in place before accepting an individual. This agreement is between the individual, relative or carer and the home. Some individuals, relative, carer may apply for a part funded care package through social services/NHS - very difficult to get as the individual must have at least two significant needs e.g. dementia on its own does not qualify. If you think the NHS is a mess, just wait until you encounter the social care sector. Provision for the elderly is a scandal. The care itself is a lottery. Don't be fooled by the glossy brochures, they lie. And as it is all private and run for profit, it is all woefully overpriced for what you get. It's a disgrace..
