One in four children starting school still in nappies

Sure Start was about teaching some basics to parents, now that their parents don't seem to do that anymore for whatever reason. Got rid of that though didn't we.

No. The name might no longer be around but the basic principle is.  The government still funds a load of family hubs across the country and has a local authority program called start for life which costs around £301m out of the DFE budget.

According to the council website there are seven family hubs in Sheffield.

If people are seriously trying to blame the government for their lack of basic parenting skills, they need to take a long hard look at themselves.  Maybe if they don't know how to  parent they should do a bit of learning before they drop their knickers.

This information/ these skills are usually passed on by parents and grandparents. Something has gone wrong in some cases it would seem.

Just some reasons perhaps.

The breakdown of the extended family.

Many families are single parent nowadays?

Lots of families now live isolated from support from other family members?

In most families both parents work full time.

echo.

I don’t think that there are many professionals involved in working with young people, who think that abandoning Sure Start was a good thing.

The second rate, cheap version introduced and subsequently downgraded by successive Tory governments is but a pale shadow of the Labour version. I do hope that Starmer has the balls to bring it back.

There’s tons of research out there that shows that investing in early years provision reaps huge dividends down the line. Sure Start produced big improvements in child health and in educational achievement amongst the poorest in our society. That’s something that we all should strive for, and that we all would benefit from.

That last sentence is very sexist.  It takes two to tango.  And don’t pretend you were talking about men too when you talk about ‘dropping knickers’.  Or maybe you wear frilly knickers yourself?

Nice bit of sexism at the end there - it takes two to tango.

When there is a problem, there are generally three options:

1. Do nothing different

2. Do something different

3. Engage in wishful thinking

We can all say that other people need to do a better job of their own lives, but that falls under 3.

I might add that I don’t agree that children starting school should still be in nappies.  That is parental responsibility but quit with the sexist double standards about sexual intercourse.
