Merdocs on Devonshire Street Closed Following Eviction Notice

Recommended Posts

Merdocs, a well-known and long-standing takeaway on Devonshire Street in Sheffield, has been repossessed by its landlord due to unpaid rent. The closure, which has surprised many locals, marks the end of an era for this iconic late-night eatery.

Landlord Repossession Due to Unpaid Rent

A notice displayed in the window of Merdocs, dated 15th August, states that the landlord has taken control of the property after the rent remained unpaid for 14 days. According to the notice, the landlord acted under clause 8.1 of the lease agreement, leading to the immediate forfeiture of the lease and the eviction of the current business owner. The tenant is now legally barred from accessing the premises without a court order.

Merdocs: A Sheffield Staple for Late-Night Food

Situated at 109/111 Devonshire Street, Merdocs has been a staple in Sheffield’s late-night food scene for decades. Known for its range of takeaway favourites, including pizzas, kebabs, burgers, fried chicken, and garlic bread, Merdocs has served countless Sheffield residents, particularly those looking for a bite to eat after a night out in the city centre.

Despite mixed online reviews—2.5 stars on TripAdvisor and 3.1 stars on Google Reviews—Merdocs was often praised for its late-night availability, making it a go-to spot when most other eateries were closed.

Impact on the Local Community

The sudden closure has left many in Sheffield disappointed. The takeaway’s website has been updated to reflect the closure, stating, “Sorry, We're currently closed, Sorry our website is closed at the moment.” The property, owned by The Twelve Capital Burgesses and Commonalty of the Town and Parish of Sheffield, now faces an uncertain future.

What’s Next for the Devonshire Street Location?

As the landlord takes control, the future of the site remains unclear. Will Merdocs reopen under new management, or will the premises be repurposed for a different venture? For now, the shutters remain down on this familiar Sheffield location.

Thank God for that.  I was getting worried that takeaways in Sheffield were going the same way as the dinosaurs.

One of them is having an INSET day for staff training though - does that make it 5000 or are we still at 5001
