Over many years cross pennine routes have been discussed and planned proposals put forward usally just before major infrastructure improvements are announced in London, usually the extensive preparation work fades away .

Is a crossrail 2 about to be announced ?

The links between the Norths major cities are pathetic .

The money for the bypass would be better spent improving rail links to make them faster and more reliable. Lots and lots of people are deterred from driving over the Pennines to Manchester because of the congestion, so when congestion is reduced they will be tempted back on to the roads and the congestion will eventually return.

Having some friends living down there, they'd beg to differ.

 

Newbury traffic was always horrendous before the bypass was built, and that was back in the 90's.  I can't imagine what it'd be like with todays traffic levels.

Clearly the topic/project has political as well as environmental for many years

The previous MP, (and maybe others prior to that before we moved over here),  seemed to be using it as a political football, perhaps being less than truthful in some of his accusations, and then claiming a personal victory when the court case was decided.

It's very much a link road and not a large scale bypass, so may cause issues for residents in other villages, such as Tintwistle, if it leads to a long term increase in HGV traffic.

In practical terms, the only way to reduce congestion on both Woodhead and Snake is to put weight limits on them, thereby forcing HGV's on to the M62. I believe that this was one of the reasons for the M62; to allow HGV's to cross the pennines through all weathers.

Of course, counter productively, it could lead to an increase in car and lighter transport using the routes.
