Are charity ads going too far?

Recommended Posts

Reason I ask is that there was one on the TV the other day and it was quite disturbing by the underlying message. It was for yet another children's cancer charity that no-one's heard of and one I can't remember the name of.

The take I got from it all was the message "Cancer is coming for YOUR kids, give us money or else."

Also many of these charity ads are being played at primetime, when the costs have to be outweighing the benefits, especially when you consider that a 30sec ad, per showing, per channel is around £20,000

So if you stuck to weekday primetime & just the terrestrials (ITV 1, 2, & 3. Ch4, Ch5) 1 showing per day is 20,000 x 5 channels (100,000) x 5 days. So half a million a week or 2 million a calendar month.

This is ignoring the production costs of the ad itself.

Any charity that has the money to run TV ads doesn't need my money.

That is stupid logic.

Maintaining a high profile in the public consciousness through media presence is probably worth 100 times in donations what it costs.

Ah yes " charity"

One of those words that we have been brainwashed over the years to not question or raise any doubts against. Thankfully folk are now starting to realise that it's unfortunately rife with chancers and scammers.

Mental Health is the new one.

I contribute to Children's Cancer & Leukaemia cant' afford to do them all.

I give a monthly amount to UNICEF.   The local supermarket here has a good scheme, they have a collecting box next to the returned bottles machine. Every month it’s a different charity - the food bank, or first aid lessons for the local schools etc - and you just put your voucher for your returned bottles into the box. You don’t really notice that you’ve given anything because it’s only a couple of euros and you haven’t taken anything out of your purse, but because just about everyone donates it all adds up to a tidy sum for the charities.

Not quite on topic, we used to have a monthly direct debit to Fred Hollows Foundation. After about a year of donating I'd get regular phone calls from them asking me to increase the donation, and they were very persistent.

I sent a £10 cheque to the WWF - they got my address from my bank and I was inundated with leaflets left them in the old house,  then I gave £50 to Go Fund Me for Jenny she went to America for treatment but I still get emails.
