As Sheffield gears up for the upcoming winter season, residents are being asked to help name the city's fleet of gritters, adding a unique local twist. The Streets Ahead fleet consists of 19 gritters, and while popular names like "Spready Mercury" and "Gritney Spears" have been favourites in the past, this year's competition is seeking names that reflect Sheffield's distinctive character.

Out of the 19 gritters, 12 are waiting to be named by the public, while local school children will have the honour of naming the remaining five. However, the fleet’s two smaller gritters are not part of the competition.

Celebrate Sheffield with Creative Gritter Names

Councillor Joe Otten, chair of Sheffield City Council’s Waste and Street Scene Policy Committee, encouraged the community to participate: “We want our gritters to reflect our city, so draw inspiration from the heroes, legends, festivals, or places that are unique to Sheffield. So, I’m asking people to get their thinking caps on and come up with some clever and imaginative names.”

Entries should be no longer than four words or 25 characters, including spaces.

To participate, residents must email their suggestions to GritterNamingCompetition@amey.co.uk with the subject line ‘gritter naming competition’. The competition closes on Friday, 11 October 2024, and winners will be notified by the end of October.

A judging panel will review the submissions, and those who come up with the most creative names will be invited to Amey Ltd’s Olive Grove depot later in the year. Here, they will have the opportunity to meet the gritter bearing its new name.

Winter Preparations Underway

The winter season officially starts on 1 October, with gritting crews on standby 24/7 to respond to weather alerts, including freezing temperatures and forecasts for ice and snow. The Streets Ahead winter programme is a critical part of keeping Sheffield's roads safe during the colder months.
