Mr. Johnson Posted yesterday at 07:31 Share Posted yesterday at 07:31 However much was spent on this for a such a privileged minority is plainly wasteful. Consider the population of Sheffield then factor in the number of that population who: - Are able bodied enough to cycle - Live close enough to the city centre to make cycling a viable commute time - Can fit all they need for work in a rucksack - Work in a fixed city centre location - Works in above location with showering and changing facilities - Will be doing any form of shopping so light that it can be transported on a bike - Will be cycling into the centre for leisure with other able bodied people and not meeting up with parents/grandparents/any other friends or family who are not able to cycle And that number of people will be a tiny percentage of the population. A privileged minority. I'm all for the changes for the city centre to move away from traditional retail but with so much money needing to be spent in other areas, this just comes across as a pure waste of money on a vanity project.

So many terrible, dreadful, and outright ageist & ableist assumptions about how many people 'can't cycle' in this post. So at odds with what the reality of cycling rates among older/disabled populations in places with really good infrastructure is like. And to suggest it's an elitist privilege when the reality is that the lowest income demographics struggle to cover the costs of expensive car ownership. No one ever seems to give a crap about them while they're busy defending car space?
