Stocksbridge Town Deal update

Recommended Posts

Following the recent General Election, Dr Marie Tidball MP, the newly elected Member of Parliament for Stocksbridge & Penistone, has been appointed as Co-Chair of the Stocksbridge Town Deal Board. She joins Yuri Matischen, the current Co-Chair, as the Board moves forward with its ambitious plans for the regeneration of Stocksbridge.

In her role, Dr Tidball expressed her enthusiasm for contributing to the project in her home constituency. She commented:

“I’m excited to be part of the Town Deal project in my home constituency and to make a positive difference to local residents and businesses. I am already enjoying working with the Board to successfully deliver the ambitious new vision for the future of Stocksbridge and look forward to strengthening the involvement of the local community.”

Yuri Matischen, who has been Co-Chair throughout the development of the Town Deal, echoed this sentiment:

“This is an exciting time for Stocksbridge, with projects now firmly in the next stage of development. The Board looks forward to working with Marie to deliver against Phase 1 projects currently underway.”

Opportunities to Join the Town Deal Board

The Stocksbridge Towns Fund team is now seeking expressions of interest from individuals wishing to join the Board. They are looking for two new members:

1. A Stocksbridge resident or worker with expertise in post-16 and adult education.

2. A community resident with a background in community engagement, management, or volunteering in the Stocksbridge area.

Progress on Key Town Deal Projects

The Stocksbridge Town Deal continues to deliver significant developments, with projects progressing across two phases.

Stocksbridge 519: Sheffield City Council has approved the plans for this landmark building, which will serve as a key part of the town centre regeneration. The project is now in the contractor tender stage, with more updates expected soon.

Hopper Bus: Work is underway to finalise vehicle procurement and route details. The new service is expected to be on the road in the coming months.

Placemaking and Shop Front Improvements: Outline designs are being finalised, and planning applications are in progress to enhance the look of the town centre.

Oxley Park Improvements: The new All-wheels Park has been completed, and upgrades to footpaths and connectivity through New Hall Wood have improved accessibility across the park.

Sports Hub: Local sports clubs, including Stocksbridge Park Steels FC and Stocksbridge Rugby Club, have received grants for ground and pitch improvements as part of the town’s broader sports facility enhancement plans.

The term 'regeneration' is doing some heavy lifting there.

How about they come up with some plans for light rail or tram/train system out to Stocksbridge and the wider valley?  That would provide the public with something much more substantial.

That isn’t within their remit. Big transport projects are for the South Yorkshire Mayor and the Government to put together, rather than a Town Deal Board.

For the smaller remit of a Town Deal Board, they seem to be doing a lot now after several years of stagnation and issues.

Stocksbridge got £24 million for the town deal. That might buy you one km of tram track if you were lucky. Leeds are planning to build 2 lines which will cost them at least £2 or 3 billion.
