Fareast
I used to go in both and remember a lot of the characters who used to go in . The Sportsman was called the 'two-steps ' and the Vine had Ivy as the Landlady , a son with special problems called David , a daughter called Carole and Ivy's husband [ Bernard ? ] , a really nice old geezer who was much older than Ivy . The characters who went in both pubs are too numerous to mention but , I suppose , one who nobody will ever forget was ' Dido' , who for a brief period got " a job " collecting glasses at the Vine . Needless to say , he didn't last long , for obvious reasons ! [ that is , if you knew of Dido's little weaknesses !]. I think the aforementioned David from the Vine got a bit obsessed too with the film " The Alamo " and went to see it about 75 times . There were loads of ' events ' happening in that area every day and it was ALWAYS interesting to go in the pubs round there and pick up the latest gossip .
